    Description

Archive of 39 letters from Famous Americans of 1844-45
Each letter is the response to a request for autograph from George A. Carnes
Mr. (master?) Carnes apparently wrote dozens of letters to famous people - mostly politicians and statesmen - in 1844 and 1845, asking for a response in their own hand. This collection of letters is their response. Each letter is written and signed by hand. Many of them are dated and some indicate the office of the correspondent. The letters are neatly tipped into a custom book made for the purpose. The owners initials are on the spine.
Included in the collection are letters from:
    VP of the United States
    US Secretary of Treasury
    US Secretary of War
    US Secretary of State
    Postmaster General
    US Senators
Governors of Ohio, Alabama, New Hampshire, Maine, and New York
